Belle Boyd: Female Saboteur



In the world of espionage, a person’s sexuality and identity can be used as a weapon. In particular, this idea can be seen with female spies. Belle Boyd, born Maria Isabella Boyd, was a confederate spy in the American Civil War. Belle Boyd was a successful spy, because she was a woman. Belle used her beauty as a way to obtain information from Union officers and was not perceived as a threat. She operated from her father’s hotel and passed along valuable information to Confederate generals.
